How long has it taken you to create your product? If you’re like many, it’s taken months or even years to come up with a product you’re sure will be a hit with consumers. While you may be confident your product will be a success, the truth is that 95 percent of new products fail every year.

Although that figure is intimidating, it shouldn’t deter you from bringing your product to market because you can take steps to avoid many of the things that cause new products to fail. One reason that some products fail is poor packaging. While you may have created a packaging design that tested well in focus groups and held up perfectly in physical tests for durability and functionality, it won’t matter if you partner with the wrong company to produce your product packages.

Product Packaging: Common Questions

If you choose the wrong partner to manufacturer your packaging, in can have a negative influence on your product launch, and you may not be able to recover from it. For instance, if a manufacturer fails to follow your design and your packaging can’t hold up during shipping, you’ll end up having to absorb losses for products that never even made it onto store shelves.

Packaging is used to convey information about the product it contains as well as the company that produced the product. If your partner produces substandard packaging, it can make your products come across as cheap and tarnish your brand’s image long before your brand even has a chance to become a household name.

If you’re trying to find a packaging producer or you’re thinking about changing packaging companies for your established product line, it’s helpful if you’re familiar with what to know when working with a packaging company. If you know what to expect when you work with a packaging company, it will help you to select the right partner for your product packages. Of course, knowing where to find a packing company will also help you choose the best partner to handle your packaging needs. You can’t choose a packaging manufacturer if you don’t know where to find one, after all.

To determine if a company is a good fit to provide packaging for your products, you should ask some questions before you agree to partner with the organization. Here are a few of those questions:

  • What are the typical hours for your company, and how quickly can a product be produced?
  • What kind of equipment do you use?
  • What are your capabilities?
  • Can you show me some of your latest work?

While the answers a potential packaging partner provides to the questions just listed are important, there are some other topics you should inquire about when you’re choosing a partner. You should ask about a company’s safety and quality record, for example. Also, you might want to inquire about the organization’s proximity to your location. Even if a company isn’t located close to yours, it doesn’t mean the outfit isn’t suited to be your partner. It all depends on how well the company fulfills your needs and the costs of their services.

Finally, ask a prospective partner for a list of referrals you can contact to find out about their experiences working with the packaging company. When you reach out to a potential partner’s referrals, be sure you ask about how the company resolves problems, makes decisions and communicates.
